I vividly recall those imaginary Test Matches in the back yard of Panania with
the 4 Waugh boys all vying the position of being the batsmen, our "dark green
caps" pulled down tight, whilst the dulcet tones of Alan McGilvray rained down
on us from the patio. No one wanted to be a pommie. We all desperately
aspired to be a baggy greener. The seed had been sewn.
Unfortunately for a lot of kids out there they don't have the opportunity to turn
their dreams into reality. In 18 years touring the world as a professional cricketer,
I saw many different countries and cultures. It has helped shape me as the person
I am today and provided the inspiration for my involvement in charity work.
I established the Steve Waugh Foundation in Australia in 2005 to help young
people whose dreams are shattered by illness, circumstance and in desperate
need. Since then I have come across heartbreaking cases where the families have absolutely nowhere to turn.

We have set out to actively raise funds and bring
much needed relief, and I am proud to say that in excess of 97% of funds raised
are available for payment to recipients.
To me, being Australian is about looking after your mates, taking care of the less
fortunate, supporting the underdog and enhancing the spirit that makes all
Australians unique.
Through the Steve Waugh Foundation, I know I really can make a difference,
bring hope, compassion and opportunity where once it wasn't clear or certain.
Please join me at the Forever Green Dinner, and become part of the spirit of
the Baggy Green.
